Okay I should probably explain, Half-Life: Source was Valve's crack at bringing Half-Life to the Source engine, and even from day one some things were off, but time has not been kind to Half-Life: Source, engine updates have broken plenty of things, from minor graphical glitches, to some AI not doing what it's supposed to in some story moments, the crowbar sound is just ear-assaultingly incorrect, sometimes the skybox freaks out, and in one particular section, the game turns into deep-fried voidspace with a side order of seizure bites. Half-Life: Source is a mistake and should not exist. The content in the latter chapters is undeniably better, but many players have expressed discontent at how long the final chapters of the game go on, so don't expect to blast through the last 3 chapters in one marathon session, I would take them a bit at a time to avoid Xen-Fatigue. and unfortunately lengthened some of the other least favourite chapters. It also did a little tinkering with some of the more maligned parts of the original, shortening one of people's least favourite chapters. Not that it's degraded over time, no, the game still works nigh-identically to the original release, but game design has evolved significantly, so GoldSrc games may feel like they have aged less well than they really have, compared to what most players are used to.īlack Mesa gives a shiny new coat of paint to the 1998 original, every important moment, story beat, set piece and sound effect feels like it belongs. In other ways, time has not been so kind to GoldSrc. It's a marvel these games still work as well as they do, it's a testament to Valve's commitment to preserving their older titles, they just work, plenty of games from this era have not fared as nicely, the Half Life games just work straight out the box, the most 99% of players have to do is tweak a couple options to their liking. Also the original is like 10 bucks and the expansions are 5 bucks each, Opposing Force is good, and Blue Shift is. Both are definitely worth your time, Black Mesa as a good game in its own right, and Half-Life as the revolutionary leap forward in technology, storytelling and gameplay that it still is to this day. Half Life 1 is still worth playing it its original form (ignore the fact that I got fed up with it and stopped playing halfway through, I suck at games) even with the jank. Black Mesa is better for a first playthrough, it irons out a lot of the jank and some outdated level design, as well as bringing more modern improvements to the feel of the game.
